
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18 in 2000) was an American actress and singer with a career that spanned over 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her sultry, languid contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her rendition of "Cry Me a River", a track that she had included on her debut album. In addition to the recording, London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her career as an actress. London's 35 year acting career began in the film industry in 1944. It featured roles as the female lead role in numerous westerns. She signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This was the beginning of her professional career as a musician. Her last studio album was released in the year 1969. Her success continued as the female character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she was with her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
